Oilers Rally for Wild Win, Pull Even with Kings in Playoff Series

EDMONTON, Canada — In a stunning comeback, the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Los Angeles Kings 7-4 on April 25, 2025, leveling their playoff series at 2-2.
With less than seven minutes remaining in the third period, the Oilers were on the brink of a 3-0 deficit when Evander Kane scored during a goal-mouth scramble. Initially thought to be a kicked goal, a review revealed that Kane had touched the puck with his stick before it crossed the goal line, tying the game.
The Kings challenged the goal for goaltender interference, but the ruling was upheld, giving the Oilers a power play. Edmonton capitalized as Evan Bouchard scored just seconds later, turning a deficit into a lead.
The Oilers’ victory marked a significant shift in the series dynamics. In goal for Edmonton, Calvin Pickard made his playoff debut in relief of Stuart Skinner and displayed a solid performance, stopping 24 of 28 shots.
Pickard was tested early, allowing goals from Adrian Kempe and Kevin Fiala, but made crucial saves to keep his team in the game. His biggest stop came six minutes into the third period when he deflected a shot from Quinton Byfield.
Meanwhile, the Oilers started strong with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scoring just 2:49 into the game, capitalizing on a pass from Zach Hyman and finally securing their first lead of the series.
The Kings, who once struggled on the power play last year, showed marked improvement with a 7-for-12 rate in the series so far, reinforcing their offensive strategy. Defenseman Drew Doughty, now on the second power-play unit, adapted to a new role after the acquisition of Andrei Kuzmenko.
Kings coach Jim Hiller praised Doughty’s character, saying, “He’s a team-first guy, so for now, he’s just grabbed the reins of that second group.”
Despite facing aggressive play, Los Angeles forward Byfield has remained focused on his game, recognizing the respect earned from opponents. “If they feel they’ve got to come out to me, that definitely is a sign of respect,” he said.
The victory at Rogers Place energized the Oilers, and they hope to carry this momentum into Game 4 of the series.
