Oilers Return Home with Hope After Tough Road Trip
Edmonton, Alberta — The Edmonton Oilers returned home Monday after a challenging 11-day road trip, feeling optimistic despite the difficulties. Captain Connor McDavid noted the team’s progress, especially after winning three of the seven games played on the trip. With six of their next seven games at home, the team hopes to build momentum, starting with a matchup against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night.
“That was a tough trip, a lot of games, a lot of cities,” McDavid said. “We didn’t have one practice during those two weeks. We need to take advantage of time at home for practice and rest.
The Oilers currently hold a 10-9-5 record, sitting six in the Pacific Division, only four points behind the leading Anaheim Ducks. However, they face pressure as teams ahead have games in hand.
A key reason for optimism is the anticipated return of veteran forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who has been out since November 10. “We haven’t played with a full deck all year,” McDavid stated. “Getting everyone back healthy will be significant for us.”
Nugent-Hopkins expressed positivity about the Oilers’ recent play despite his absence. “I thought they played really hard in the last few games,” he said. “They were doing the right things, especially in the Florida game.”
The Oilers ended their road trip on a high note, defeating the Florida Panthers 6-3 after an earlier 2-1 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Nugent-Hopkins highlighted the team’s defensive strategy as a crucial factor for success. “We were winning one-on-one battles and defending well,” he remarked.
As the longest-serving Oiler, he stressed the importance of hard work to overcome early-season struggles. “We understand it takes a lot of work and we have the ability to do it,” Nugent-Hopkins said. “It starts with doing the right things.”
Following the game against the Stars, the Oilers will face the Seattle Kraken. Then they will play five consecutive games at home, offering a chance to gain crucial points in the standings.
