The Oklahoma State University (OSU) Cowboys are set to make a significant change in their lineup as quarterback Garret Rangel prepares to start his first game of the season against Brigham Young University (BYU). This comes after a series of benchings for the team’s former starter, Alan Bowman.

The decision follows a challenging three-game losing streak, culminating in a 38-14 defeat by West Virginia, after which Bowman was benched for Rangel for the second time in three games. Head Coach Mike Gundy had mentioned earlier in the week that the coaching staff was evaluating their quarterback options.

Rangel, who showcased promise during his appearances this season, seems ready to take on a more pivotal role. During his recent participation in the “QB Lifestyle Podcast,” Rangel expressed excitement and readiness to seize the opportunity against BYU. “I feel like all the hard work and preparation we had just from my freshman year to last year to this year, it’s finally paying off,” he stated.

This development also follows an unfortunate turn for redshirt sophomore Zane Flores, who was initially expected to be Rangel’s backup but has been sidelined following a season-ending surgery due to a lower leg injury, as reported by The Oklahoman.

Rangel, who has been with the Cowboys for three seasons, has a completion rate of 50.9% over 171 career pass attempts. His current season shows a slight dip with a completion rate of 45.8%. However, his performance against West Virginia, where he completed 4 of 5 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown, marks a recent improvement.

The challenge ahead is significant as BYU’s defense ranks first nationally in pass efficiency defense. The Cougars also stand strong with 10 interceptions this season. Stopping OSU’s running game, led by Ollie Gordon, will be crucial. Gordon, while not matching last year’s success where he led the nation in rushing yards, still poses a considerable threat.

Looking ahead, Rangel’s preparation and the team’s response to their losing streak will be critical in their upcoming match, as both teams strive for a successful performance.
