Ole Miss Faces Alabama in High-Stakes SEC Showdown
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The No. 21 Ole Miss Rebels (14-2, 3-0 SEC) will face their toughest test of the season Wednesday night as they take on the fourth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide (14-2, 3-0 SEC) in a battle of Southeastern Conference unbeatens. The game tips off at 6 p.m. CT at Coleman Coliseum and will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
Ole Miss, led by head coach Chris Beard, is seeking its first win in Tuscaloosa since 2015. The Crimson Tide holds a commanding 74-11 all-time advantage over the Rebels at home. Alabama has also won nine of the last 10 matchups, including seven straight.
“It’s early in the race, but it’s certainly an opportunity for us,” Beard said. “We’ll have to play our best game of the year. That doesn’t mean make every shot or play mistake-free, but we absolutely have to play well. Everybody who plays for us is going to have to play their A-game.”
Alabama, under third-year head coach Nate Oats, boasts the nation’s top offense, averaging 91.1 points per game. The Tide is led by guard Mark Sears, who leads the SEC in scoring with 19.1 points per game and ranks first in free throw attempts and makes. Forward Grant Nelson anchors the team on the boards, averaging 8.6 rebounds per game.
“Sears is a winner,” Beard said. “He leads Alabama to the Final Four last year and decides to come back. He’s preseason college basketball Player of the Year by most people to start the season. He’s doing exactly what he did when he left the floor last year.”
Ole Miss has been a surprise in the SEC this season, with its only losses coming against Memphis and Louisville. The Rebels have leaned on a strong backcourt, led by senior guards Sean Pedulla and Jaylen Murray, who combine for 30.5 points per game. The team’s defense, a hallmark of Beard’s coaching style, ranks 21st nationally in efficiency.
Alabama enters the game with an impressive resume, including wins over No. 6 Houston, No. 20 North Carolina, and No. 12 Oklahoma. The Tide’s high-powered offense is complemented by a strong rebounding game, ranking second nationally with 45.4 boards per game.
With both teams undefeated in SEC play, Wednesday’s matchup could have significant implications for the conference race. Ole Miss will look to overcome its historical struggles in Tuscaloosa, while Alabama aims to maintain its dominance at home and stay atop the SEC standings.
