Olise Faces Language Challenge Ahead of World Cup Aspirations

LONDON, England – Michael Olise, a rising star in French football, is aiming to solidify his place in the national squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup, but language barriers may hinder his progression. According to a report by L’Equipe, the French-Algerian winger must enhance his French communication skills to meet the expectations of head coach Didier Deschamps.
The 23-year-old, born in Hammersmith to a Nigerian father and a French-Algerian mother, has always expressed his desire to represent France. Olise represented the nation at various youth levels, notably at Under-18, and made his senior debut earlier this year.
Having come through the youth academies of Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City, Olise signed a £51 million contract with Crystal Palace, where he showcased his talents and love for the game, including during France’s summer Olympic campaign. Olise scored two goals and registered five assists despite the team finishing as runners-up to Spain.
Reflecting on his Olympic experience, Olise said, “It was fantastic, especially in France. We did a lot of preparatory work leading up to the competition, and the team was able to come together. Traveling around the country, I felt the fervor of being at home.”
Former French international Thierry Henry spoke highly of Olise’s commitment, noting, “That desire to want to play for France…I got goosebumps when I talked to him about it. He preferred to play for France rather than England because it’s his dream.”
Despite his limited public speaking, Olise has actively engaged with French media, albeit in a hesitant manner. He has made five appearances for Deschamps’ senior squad, contributing to the team even amidst challenges.
In their upcoming match against Croatia, Olise is expected to start in place of Juventus’ Randal Kolo-Muani as Les Bleus strive to overcome a disappointing 2-0 defeat. Olise’s ability to communicate effectively in French will be vital for his continued development and integration into the national team.
