Fred Kerley Olympic Sprinter Arrest

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley was arrested Thursday by the Broward Sheriff’s Office in South Florida. The 29-year-old athlete faces a battery charge, marking his second arrest this year.

According to online jail records, Kerley was taken into custody in connection with an altercation at a hotel in Dania Beach. His attorney, Richard L. Cooper, stated that the allegations lack merit and that Kerley acted in self-defense when he was attacked unprovoked. “We anticipate that Fred’s charges will be dismissed,” Cooper said.

Kerley was previously scheduled to compete in the Grand Slam Track event in Miramar this weekend, which runs from Friday through Sunday. However, the organization announced he would not participate due to the ongoing investigation.

In a separate incident in January, Kerley was arrested after allegedly assaulting a police officer in Miami Beach. Authorities reported that he approached an active police scene with an aggressive demeanor during the investigation of another incident. Kerley allegedly resisted arrest, resulting in a physical confrontation with multiple officers, who used a stun gun to subdue him.

Kerley won a silver medal in the 100 meters at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and a bronze at the 2024 Games in Paris. He has earned six medals at world championships, solidifying his status as one of America’s top sprinting stars.

As the investigation continues, Grand Slam Track remains tight-lipped, directing all inquiries to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. The recent arrest adds to the scrutiny surrounding Kerley as he navigates his sporting career.
