Orange Shirt Day Commemoration by CHIRP and Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe
The California Heritage: Indigenous Research Project (CHIRP), in collaboration with the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe, is inviting the public to join them in commemorating Orange Shirt Day. This event is designed to express solidarity with Indigenous children and families who have been affected by the historical legacy of Indian boarding schools, where many children were separated from their families and native traditions.
This year marks CHIRP’s 3rd Annual Orange Shirt Day, which coincides with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The event aims to create awareness and stand in support of those impacted by the residential school system. Scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 28, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the gathering will be held at Sierra Pines United Methodist Church, located at 22559 West Hacienda Drive in Grass Valley, near Lake of the Pines.
The event welcomes families and offers various activities, including beading, games, music, and the sharing of information, alongside a variety of food. This community gathering aims to foster a supportive and understanding environment for all attendees.
Individuals interested in contributing their time as volunteers at Orange Shirt Day are encouraged to contact Jeree & Rick Waller. They can be reached by text or voicemail at 530-320-0817, or via email, to express their willingness to participate and support this significant event.
