CORVALLIS, Ore. — Oregon State University kicked off its eighth Men’s College World Series appearance with a thrilling 4-3 win over Florida State on Friday night. Beaver left fielder Gavin Turley delivered a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning, propelling the team to victory in coach Mitch Canham’s first game in Omaha as the head coach.

Canham, who played at Oregon State from 2004 to 2007 under legendary head coach Pat Casey, was emotional following the win. He reflected on the heartwarming moment of seeing Casey in Omaha. “It was awesome to see him,” Canham said. “Definitely got a big hug. Excited that he’s here.”

Canham took over as the head coach in 2020, succeeding interim head coach Pat Bailey, who led the program after Casey retired in 2018. Casey, in 24 seasons at Oregon State, recorded a 900–458–6 record and guided the Beavers to three national championships and six College World Series appearances.

“I actually felt a sense of calm come over me,” Canham said. “You always have [support] with you.” He emphasized the importance of faith and community, mentioning, “Not only that, do I have Jesus with me? I’ve got all the guys in the clubhouse with me and all of Beaver Nation.”

With the victory on Friday night, Oregon State advanced to the winner’s bracket in the College World Series, set to face off against the Chanticleers at 6:00 PM CT on Friday. The Chanticleers have a remarkable 24-game winning streak.

This appearance in Omaha marks Canham’s first time managing in this prestigious setting. Oregon State’s history shows this is the first independent team to reach the eight-team CWS field since Miami in 2004.

Canham, reflecting on the journey to Omaha, said, “From the beginning of the year, it was never about getting to Omaha. It’s about winning it.” He has led the Beavers to eight consecutive NCAA baseball tournament appearances.

Oregon State celebrates its rich history with Canham at the helm, aiming for another national title. As the Beavers embrace the challenge at the CWS, they distinguish themselves as strong contenders.
