Orioles Recall Infield Prospect Coby Mayo Amid Injury Concerns

Baltimore, MD — The Baltimore Orioles are recalling infielder Coby Mayo from Triple-A Norfolk due to an injury to Ramón Urías. Urías was scratched from the lineup with hamstring discomfort before the game against the Kansas City Royals scheduled for Friday night.
A source confirmed to The Baltimore Sun that Mayo is set to join the team as the only healthy infielder on the 40-man roster who is not currently in Baltimore.
Mayo, 23, is regarded as the No. 27 overall prospect in Major League Baseball, according to Baseball America. He made his MLB debut last season but struggled, hitting just .098 with 22 strikeouts in 17 games across two separate stints. Despite this, Mayo has thrived in Triple-A, boasting a .276 batting average with 40 home runs and a .915 OPS over the last three seasons with the Norfolk Tides.
His recent performance has improved significantly. On Wednesday, Mayo had a standout game, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, and three RBIs. His hot streak in the minors positions him as a promising addition to the Orioles’ lineup, especially if Urías is unable to return quickly.
Mayo has expressed his desire to earn a spot on the major league roster and acknowledged the challenges he faced earlier this season. He stated, “It definitely is difficult… It obviously sucks, because you feel like you’ve proved everything you needed to. And sometimes, it doesn’t feel like it’s quite enough.” However, he also noted his determination to improve his performance, emphasizing his recent success in Triple-A.
If Urías needs to be placed on the injured list, Mayo would likely take his spot on the Orioles’ 26-man active roster. The team and fans are hopeful that Mayo can contribute to the offense as they navigate a challenging season.
