Orioles Shortstop Exits Game, Status Uncertain Ahead of Season

BALTIMORE, Md. — Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson left Thursday’s Grapefruit League game against the Toronto Blue Jays after just one inning due to undisclosed reasons. He was replaced in the field by Luis Vasquez.
Henderson, 23, initially attempted to beat out a ground ball that was mishandled during the first inning and also showcased his defensive skills with a leaping catch before departing the game. Fans and team officials are awaiting further updates on his condition.
His potential absence would be a significant setback for the Orioles, especially after Henderson’s breakout performance during the 2024 season. He was ranked as the No. 6 overall player for the upcoming season by RotoBaller, after posting an impressive .281 batting average, .364 on-base percentage, and .529 slugging percentage. He recorded 37 home runs, 92 RBIs, 21 steals, and 118 runs scored across 159 regular-season games last year.
As the 2025 season approaches, Henderson’s health will be closely monitored. Losing a player of his caliber could hinder the Orioles’ competitive edge in the division.
Updates regarding Henderson’s status are expected soon, and the team will provide more information as it becomes available.
