Orlando Pirates Vs Chippa United

Orlando Pirates will host Chippa United at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday, marking the opening of their Premiership season. This encounter will be the 23rd league meeting between the two sides since the 2012-13 season. Historically, Orlando Pirates have dominated this fixture, securing 15 victories compared to Chippa United’s four, with three matches ending in a draw.

Chippa United’s largest triumph against Orlando Pirates was a 2-0 home victory during the 2015-16 season, whereas Pirates’ most significant win was a 4-1 home win in the same season. From the 2014-15 season onward, Pirates enjoyed a streak of seven consecutive home wins against Chippa before a 0-0 draw in the 2021-22 season. Over the course of their 11 home league games against Chippa, Pirates have achieved eight wins, suffered two losses, and experienced one draw.

In their previous encounters, a total of 50 goals have been scored, with Orlando Pirates contributing 35 and Chippa United 15. The most prolific scoring game occurred during the 2018-19 season when Pirates defeated Chippa 4-2 at home. Last season, the teams met three times, including league and cup competitions. Pirates triumphed 2-0 in their home league clash and 3-1 in an away Nedbank Cup semifinal, while the fixture hosted by Chippa ended 1-1.

Orlando Pirates are also notable for their recent performances in other competitions. Under the leadership of coach Jose Riveiro, they advanced to the MTN8 final, successfully defeating SuperSport United and Cape Town City. Moreover, Pirates recently won 2-0 against Jwaneng Galaxy in the first leg of the CAF Champions League‘s second preliminary round.

Chippa United, meanwhile, will be playing their first competitive fixture of the 2024-25 season after a delay in the league’s start. The team has bolstered its squad with significant signings, including Andile Jali and Aphelele Teto on loan. Historically, Chippa has not won a Premiership title and looks to make a strong start this season. Their head coach and tactics will be closely watched as they face the formidable Orlando Pirates.
