Alexander Ovechkin Nhl Goal Celebration 2024

OTTAWA, Ontario — Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals is now just 19 goals away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky‘s all-time NHL record of 894 goals. Ovechkin scored his 876th goal during a 5-4 overtime loss to the Ottawa Senators on Thursday, keeping the hockey world on edge as he closes in on the historic milestone.

Ovechkin’s power-play goal in the third period brought the Capitals within one, showcasing his relentless pursuit of the record. “When it was 4-2, we still believed we could come back,” Ovechkin said after the game. “It’s a big point for us. Obviously, overtime and the shootout, it’s maybe 50-50. But, you know, we fight and battle. It was a good game.”

The 38-year-old Russian superstar has faced challenges this season, including missing 15 games due to injuries. However, his determination remains unwavering. With only 30 games left in the season, Ovechkin’s chase for the record has become a focal point of the NHL season.

Ovechkin’s career has not been without controversy. His friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin has drawn criticism, particularly amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. Despite the political scrutiny, Ovechkin has maintained his stance as a non-political figure who loves his country. “He is renowned for being a great husband, father, friend, teammate, and a giving philanthropist,” said Douglas MacKinnon, a former White House official and hockey enthusiast. “He is also renowned for loving his native Russia and her people.”

On the ice, Ovechkin’s performance continues to inspire. His two assists in the game against Ottawa further demonstrated his all-around impact. “I was really proud of the way we played,” said Washington coach Spencer Carbery. “Other than some of the special teams stuff, 5-on-5 through the whole game, and then also the resiliency late in the third period, I thought we poured it on.”

As Ovechkin inches closer to Gretzky’s record, the hockey world watches with bated breath. Whether he achieves the milestone this season or early next, his legacy as one of the greatest players in NHL history is already cemented.
