Ovechkin Nears Gretzky’s Goals Record Ahead of Key Matchup

RALEIGH, North Carolina – Alexander Ovechkin will be in the spotlight Wednesday night as he vies to break Wayne Gretzky‘s longstanding NHL goals record. The Washington Capitals forward is just four goals away from surpassing Gretzky’s all-time record of 894, with the opportunity to inch closer when the Capitals face the Carolina Hurricanes at Lenovo Center at 7 p.m. ET.
This game marks a significant moment for Ovechkin, as his NHL career officially began in the very same building during the 2004 NHL Draft, which was previously known as the RBC Center. Ross Mahoney, who was Washington’s director of amateur scouting at the time Ovechkin was selected first overall, recalls the excitement surrounding Ovechkin’s arrival. “The team had a fan reception event at a hotel in Raleigh after the draft,” Mahoney said. “Ovi was shaking hands with every fan that came into the room. It was impressive.”
During his two-decade career, Ovechkin has consistently been in the limelight, noted for his celebratory hugs with teammates after key goals. “We were fortunate to win the NHL Draft Lottery and get a caliber player like Ovi,” Mahoney said. “I was in shock a little bit and kept thinking, ‘Wow, we’re going to get a chance to draft this guy.’”
Washington selected Ovechkin ahead of center Evgeni Malkin, who went second to the Pittsburgh Penguins. “Ovi was our guy; we thought he would be a legitimate goal-scorer,” Mahoney explained. Reflecting on Ovechkin’s journey, he added, “Did I think he would have whatever it is he’s at now? No way. If he had 550 or 600 goals, that would have been really good.”
Ovechkin’s physical prowess has played a crucial role in his success. He has recorded 3,733 hits, ranking third all-time since the NHL made the statistic official in the 2005-06 season. Dan Marr, vice president and director of NHL Central Scouting, described Ovechkin’s personality as “larger than life.” “He always loved being at the rink, being with teammates, and playing the game,” Marr said.
Scouts have long noted Ovechkin’s attributes. Goran Stubb, former NHL director of European Scouting, said, “His drive, work ethic, and winning attitude combined with his physical strength and offensive instincts were sensational.” Ovechkin’s impact was evident from a young age; he dominated at international tournaments, including the U18 Junior World Cup in 2002-03.
At that point in his career, Ovechkin started showcasing his incredible skills. Central Scouting’s John Williams recalled meeting Ovechkin at the Combine, noting, “He had an air about him. Confident but not cocky.” Mahoney echoed these sentiments, highlighting Ovechkin’s infectious personality during interviews.
As Ovechkin approaches the record, Mahoney stated, “Right now, it’s Ovi’s world and I’m a tiny little part of it.” His enduring passion for the game is evident; after scoring, Ovechkin still celebrates enthusiastically with his teammates, demonstrating his love for hockey.
Ovechkin’s journey from a young player to a potential record-breaker reflects not only his skill but also his character both on and off the ice. As he gears up for this milestone, fans and teammates alike are eager to witness history in the making.
