Ovechkin Nets 893rd Goal, Nears Gretzky’s Record

WASHINGTON — Alex Ovechkin scored his 893rd career goal on April 4, 2025, moving one goal closer to tying Wayne Gretzky‘s NHL record.
The Washington Capitals left wing found the net just 3:52 into the game against the Chicago Blackhawks, propelling him further into the record books with Gretzky in attendance for the first time during this pursuit.
In reaching this milestone, Ovechkin achieved 40 goals for the 14th time in 20 seasons, the most in league history. This performance marks him as only the second player to score 40 goals in a season at age 39 or older, joining Gordie Howe, who netted 44 goals in the 1968-69 season at age 40.
“It’s an amazing feeling to keep scoring at this level, especially with Wayne here to witness it,” Ovechkin said following the game. “Every goal brings me closer to a legacy I’ve always admired.”
Additionally, Ovechkin’s latest goal was a significant moment for the Capitals franchise as he broke a tie with Gretzky for the most career first-period goals, now holding 242 to Gretzky’s 241.
The Capitals currently lead the Eastern Conference, with six games remaining in the regular season. They are set to face the New York Islanders on Sunday, April 8. Given Ovechkin’s current form, anticipation builds for whether he can catch or surpass Gretzky’s legendary total of 894 goals before the regular season concludes.
“We’re all rooting for him,” Capitals head coach said. “It’s a testament to his talent and dedication to the game.”
