Alex Ovechkin Empty Net Goal 873 Nhl

Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin became the second player in NHL history to score at least 20 goals in 20 consecutive seasons, achieving the milestone in a 4-1 victory over the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena on Saturday. Ovechkin’s 20th goal of the season, an empty-netter, also marked his 873rd career goal, placing him just 21 shy of Wayne Gretzky‘s all-time record of 894.

The 39-year-old Russian forward joined hockey legend Gordie Howe, who scored 20 or more goals in 22 straight seasons from 1949-50 to 1970-71. Ovechkin’s consistency has been remarkable, as he has never scored fewer than 24 goals in a season during his 20-year NHL career. His lowest total came in the COVID-19-shortened 2020-21 season, when he netted 24 goals in 56 games.

Ovechkin’s latest goal came at 19:01 of the third period, sealing the Capitals’ win. He also added an assist in the game, further solidifying his impact. Despite missing 16 games earlier this season due to a fractured left fibula, Ovechkin has scored 20 goals in just 27 games, maintaining his pursuit of Gretzky’s record.

Capitals rookie Ivan Frank scored his first NHL goal in the game, while Tom Wilson and Connor McMichael also found the net. Goaltender Charlie Lindgren made 32 saves to secure the win. For the Predators, Filip Forsberg scored his second goal in as many games, but it wasn’t enough to prevent their second consecutive loss.

Ovechkin, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL Draft, holds numerous NHL records, including the most 30-goal seasons (18) and 40-goal seasons (13). He is also tied with Gretzky and Mike Bossy for the most 50-goal seasons (nine). With 873 career goals, Ovechkin remains on track to potentially surpass Gretzky’s record later this season.
