Oregon Interstate Pileup Snowy Conditions

MULTNOMAH COUNTY, Ore. — A devastating pileup involving more than 100 vehicles occurred Thursday on Interstate 84 amid dangerous whiteout conditions near Multnomah Falls, causing major traffic disruptions and prompting emergency responses from local authorities.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office reported via social media that an SUV caught fire during the incident, but all occupants managed to escape unharmed. “Responders are going car by car. There are reports of injuries; no number at this time,” the sheriff’s office stated.

Visibility was severely restricted due to blowing and drifting snow, which is expected to continue affecting travel conditions in the region. The Oregon Department of Transportation announced a closure of the westbound lanes three miles west of Multnomah Falls. This closure may extend significantly due to ongoing weather issues.

“We advise everyone to stay in their vehicles for their safety unless there is a clear or immediate reason not to,” the sheriff’s office urged in their communications.

In addition to the pileup on I-84, part of Northeast 238th Drive in nearby Wood Village, also in Multnomah County, was closed following multiple accidents involving more than 20 vehicles due to slippery conditions.

Weather forecasts predict snowfall between 2 to 5 inches, accompanied by wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph. This has led to both winter weather and cold weather advisories in the greater Portland area.

Officials remain on alert as heavy snow, soaking rain, and gusty winds are projected to impact Northern California and Oregon on Thursday and beyond. Travelers are advised to stay informed about road conditions and to exercise caution if they must venture out during this severe weather.
