Pacers Host Struggling Nets in Critical Eastern Conference Clash

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — On Saturday, March 22, the Indiana Pacers (40-29) will face off against the Brooklyn Nets (23-47) in an important Eastern Conference regular-season matchup at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. This clash comes after the Pacers secured a narrow 105-99 overtime victory against the Nets just days prior, and Indiana is looking to solidify its playoff positioning while Brooklyn fights to end a dismal stretch.
The Pacers have climbed to fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings, riding a three-game winning streak, including a hard-fought win against Brooklyn where rookie guard Benedict Mathurin shone with 28 points and 16 rebounds. “We need to remain consistent and stop playing so many close games,” said Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle after the recent victory. Although victorious, Indiana has had a mixed record, with four of their last five losses occurring by seven points or less. Their challenge lies in transitioning from tight games to decisive victories.
Mathurin’s performance has been crucial in the absence of star guard Tyrese Haliburton, who is currently listed as uncertain for this matchup due to back issues. The Pacers’ depth will be tested as they prepare to start Andrew Nembhard, Aaron Nesmith, Pascal Siakam, and Myles Turner alongside Mathurin. A key focus for Indiana will be improving their defensive consistency, which has seen them allow over 120 points in several recent games.
“We have to be imposing on defense if we want to make a serious playoff push,” Turner emphasized during practice.
On the other hand, the Brooklyn Nets have struggled considerably, dropping 11 of their last 13 games, including the overtime loss to Indiana. Despite Ziaire Williams contributing 22 points in the last matchup, Brooklyn continues to grapple with a significant lack of scoring consistency. D'Angelo Russell is expected to lead the Nets, alongside Williams and new starting forwards Keon Johnson and Cameron Johnson, the latter set to return after a rest day.
“We’ve been fighting hard, but we need to get back to winning ways,” said Nets coach Jordi Fernandez. In their pursuit of a win, the Nets will aim to lessen their recent tendency for low offensive outputs, often failing to score more than 113 points in recent outings.
Both teams are expected to implement strategic adjustments following their previous encounter. The Pacers consistently score over 115 points in games, whereas the Nets have shown challenges in shooting, sitting at the bottom in the league with a 42.5% shooting percentage in the last 14 games.
While the Pacers are favored by 8.5 points for this matchup, they will need to address their defensive lapses if they hope to maintain their playoff positioning. The total points over/under is set at 222.5, indicating expectations of a high-scoring affair, contrary to the low-scoring nature of their last match.
As tip-off approaches, the energy is palpable within Gainbridge Fieldhouse, with fans eager to see if their team can repeat their recent success against a struggling Nets squad and further solidify their playoff dreams.
