San Diego Padres Jackson Merrill Activation

San Diego, CA – The San Diego Padres have activated shortstop Jackson Merrill from the injured list, a move many fans have eagerly anticipated. Merrill, who has been sidelined since April 6 with a hamstring strain, will rejoin the lineup as the team’s cleanup hitter starting Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves.

To accommodate Merrill’s return, the Padres have optioned catcher Luis Campusano to Triple-A San Antonio. Campusano, who made only three appearances this season, did not record a hit, walking four times and going 0-for-6 at the plate.

Merrill’s injury initially appeared to be minor—with the team citing tightness—but a strained right hamstring ultimately resulted in a month-long recovery. Merrill’s return is notable as he signed a nine-year, $135 million contract extension on April 2, surprising many in the baseball community.

“Literally from the moment that A.J. even talked to me for the first time,” Merrill said, reflecting on his desire to stay in San Diego long term. “Before the Draft ever even happened in 2021, the Padres were the first team that ever reached out to me.”

Before his injury, Merrill was having a strong season with three home runs and 10 RBIs, boasting a batting average of .378 and an OPS of 1.090 over 10 games. His presence is expected to provide a significant boost to a Padres team currently on a six-game winning streak, improving their overall record to 14-9 without him.

Merrill’s reintegration into the lineup is seen as crucial as the team aims to capitalize on their current momentum. The Padres hope to continue their success against the Braves and maintain their position in the competitive National League.
