Fernando Tatis Jr. San Diego Padres

LAS VEGAS, NV — The San Diego Padres confirmed on Wednesday that they have no plans to trade star outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. this offseason. This statement follows speculation that emerged earlier in the week during the General Manager Meetings at The Cosmopolitan hotel.

“We’re not trading Tatis,” a Padres source said emphatically. Multiple team sources reiterated that the idea of moving Tatis, a two-time Platinum Glove award winner and popular All-Star, has not been discussed either internally or with other teams.

The conversations about trading Tatis largely stem from concerns about his contract, as well as the contracts of fellow Padres stars Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts. Tatis is signed for more than $290 million over the next nine years, while Machado is owed $299 million over eight years, and Bogaerts has a $203.6 million total for the same duration.

Should Tatis enter free agency today, some executives believe he would command a shorter contract, tied to his impressive but challenging past seasons. Despite a tumultuous 2022 due to injury and suspension, the 26-year-old bounced back in 2025, hitting 25 home runs, 71 RBIs, and stealing 32 bases in 155 games.

Padres’ officials have expressed intentions to keep their payroll competitive, aiming to remain among the top spenders in Major League Baseball. “We think we can be at a similar level to where we’ve been in the top 10,” CEO Erik Greupner stated.

The Padres’ focus this offseason includes supplementing their rotation and evaluating their current roster. “We feel good about the core position players that we have,” said A.J. Preller, Padres President of Baseball Operations. He noted that they might look for additional players to enhance their lineup without pursuing a new right fielder.

While the possibility of future trades remains open if financial constraints arise, San Diego plans to strategically manage its roster while retaining key talent, like Tatis, whose performance continues to be vital to the team’s success.
