Padres and Dodgers Prepare for Critical Game 3 in NLDS
Two days following a hamstring issue, Xander Bogaerts of the San Diego Padres is set to return for Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Petco Park. The Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman, who had been dealing with increased discomfort from a sprained right ankle, is also back in action. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:08 p.m. on Tuesday.
Freeman, who was 0-for-2 on Sunday, was substituted at first base by Max Muncy and in the batting order by Enrique Hernandez after leaving the game. Both teams’ managers had expressed optimism about the return of their star players for Game 3 during Monday’s workout. “It’s a go as of now,” stated Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, affirming Freeman’s participation despite his recent injury.
Bogaerts made his mark in the postseason, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in Game 1, and subsequently hitting his first postseason home run since the 2021 ALCS on Sunday, despite having to exit the game due to cramping. Padres manager Mike Shildt noted that Bogaerts was ready for action after receiving treatment.
In preparation for the game, the Dodgers made a roster change with Major League Baseball’s approval, replacing right-hander Michael Grove, who is dealing with a shoulder injury, with Ben Casparius. Grove is unable to return until the National League Championship Series. Casparius has displayed strong performance since his MLB debut, as seen with his era and strikeout numbers noted in recent performances.
The Dodgers face the challenge of a competitive matchup as they send Walker Buehler, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, to the mound. Buehler has shown varied performances this season with a 5.38 ERA and will aim to control his walks against the Padres. Meanwhile, Padres pitcher Michael King comes off an impressive start in the postseason and holds an effective record against the Dodgers over the season.
