Padres Make History with Unprecedented Shutout Sweep of Rockies

San Diego, California – The San Diego Padres achieved a remarkable feat over the weekend, sweeping the Colorado Rockies with three consecutive shutouts, marking the first time an MLB team has accomplished this since the Cleveland Indians in 2017.
In their 6-0 victory on April 12 at Petco Park, the Padres held the Rockies scoreless for an entire three-game series, making them the first team to do so since the 2017 series between the Kansas City Royals and the Cleveland Indians. The shutout on Sunday was a continuation of the Padres’ solid start to the season, bringing their home record to a perfect 10-0.
Jason Heyward, outfielder for the Padres, expressed his enthusiasm about the team’s unity and focus after their 2-0 win in Saturday’s game. “No matter what the result is on any given day on both sides of the baseball, let’s go up there, have our approach,” Heyward said. “I think we’ve been doing a great job since spring training in just falling in love with that.”
This impressive run is further demonstrated by the Padres becoming the second team in MLB history, following the 1966 Cleveland team, to achieve six shutouts within the first 16 games of the season. The team’s cumulative earned run average (ERA) of 2.68 places them second in the league, with their bullpen leading the majors with a 1.51 ERA.
Manager Mike Shildt offered insights into the team’s successful atmosphere. “It’s an unbelievably supportive place; it’s a fun place that our guys love to play,” he stated, emphasizing the playoff-like intensity felt at Petco Park during home games.
On Sunday, pitcher Michael King recorded his first complete game shutout, striking out eight batters while allowing only two hits and a walk throughout his performance. King reflected on the crowd’s impact, saying, “These fans are incredible. They show out and it’s always fun to put on a show for them.”
The Padres dominated the series, having already secured victories with wins of 8-0 and 2-0 in the first two games. Nick Pivetta and Kyle Hart were crucial in the earlier games, shutting down the Rockies with their performances.
Pivetta pitched for seven scoreless innings in the opening game, striking out ten hitters which led to the 8-0 victory. Hart followed with six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, solidifying the Padres’ path to victory on April 12.
The Padres now sport a top record of 13-3 in Major League Baseball, continuing to drive forward as they prepare to face the Chicago Cubs tonight at 9:40 PM ET, hoping to extend their shutout streak.
