LOS ANGELES, CA — The San Diego Padres announced on June 16, 2025, that they have selected outfielder Bryce Johnson’s contract from Triple-A El Paso. In a corresponding move, catcher Luis Campusano has been optioned to El Paso, while right-hander Yu Darvish has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Darvish, 38, has struggled with elbow inflammation this season and has not made any major league appearances. He made one rehab start at El Paso in May. Over his 12 seasons in the majors, Darvish has achieved a record of 110-88 with a 3.58 ERA, playing for various teams including the Texas Rangers and the Chicago Cubs.

Johnson, 29, will be making his 2025 debut with the Padres after a strong performance in El Paso, where he batted .303 and hit three home runs in 42 games. His career batting average in the majors stands at .177, with one home run and nine RBIs across 88 games in previous years.

The decision to bring Johnson up follows injuries to the Padres’ outfield, specifically after a player was placed on the concussion-related injured list over the weekend. Johnson adds depth to the team, particularly as he is a switch-hitter, which could benefit the Padres’ lineup.

Campusano, who is 26 years old, has had a disappointing season, accumulating no hits in 18 at-bats. This change aims to strengthen the team’s roster as they head into crucial games.

This marks the second stint for Johnson with the Padres; he previously played with them in 2024. He was non-tendered after last season and signed a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates before returning to San Diego earlier this season.

The Padres’ management is optimistic that Johnson’s contributions will positively impact the offense as they navigate the challenges of the 2025 season.
