In a press conference held in San Diego, Padres manager Mike Shildt ardently defended his player, Manny Machado, following remarks made by Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. On Monday, Roberts described Machado’s conduct as “unsettling,” leading Shildt to respond on Tuesday with pointed refutations.

“I would never disparage another player on another team,” Shildt stated, adding emphasis to the professionalism and leadership demonstrated by Machado, particularly during a crucial moment in Game 2 of the National League Division Series (NLDS) against the Dodgers. Machado had notably rallied his team in an impromptu meeting in the dugout after an eventful inning at Dodger Stadium.

Shildt further commended Machado, referencing his potential to win the Roberto Clemente Award, which recognizes players for sportsmanship and community involvement. “It’s been a privilege to witness that,” Shildt remarked, highlighting Machado’s contributions both on and off the field.

The incident under review involved Machado throwing towards the Dodgers’ dugout, which struck netting near Roberts. However, sources informed ESPN that Major League Baseball‘s review resulted in no disciplinary action for Machado. When questioned about any potential intent behind Machado’s throw, Shildt was unequivocal, responding, “Zero.”

“Manny has exceptional arm talent,” Shildt elaborated, referring to Machado’s defensive play that secured a playoff spot for the Padres in late September. The atmosphere at Game 3 at Petco Park is expected to be intense, with Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy noting, “The Padres thrive on that kind of emotion. We need to focus on ourselves.”
