Paige Bueckers Debuts in WNBA as Hometown Celebrates

HOPKINS, Minnesota – Paige Bueckers, the first overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, made her professional debut on May 16, leading the Dallas Wings against the Minnesota Lynx. The game ended in a 99-84 loss for the Wings, but the occasion was a celebration for her hometown, which temporarily renamed itself “Paige Bueckers, Minnesota.”
The city organized a ribbon-cutting ceremony and featured local businesses serving special menu items in honor of Bueckers. Items included a Paige Bueckers sushi roll, special beers, and an exclusive ice cream flavor. Mayor Patrick Hanlon hosted the celebrations, stating, “We’re proud to name our city after her for a day.”
During the game, Bueckers had a solid performance, scoring 10 points, grabbing 7 rebounds, and providing 2 assists. However, her debut was overshadowed by Lynx player Napheesa Collier, who scored a remarkable 34 points, tying the team record for a season opener. Courtney Williams also contributed significantly with 25 points for the Lynx.
“Room to grow,” Bueckers reflected on her first game, emphasizing the importance of building a foundation for future success. She expressed disbelief at her hometown’s unique tribute, saying, “I thought it was fake news. But it’s also surreal.”
Before making her WNBA debut, Bueckers led the University of Connecticut to a national championship and won several prestigious awards, including the Wooden Award in her freshman year. The local community has shown immense support for her throughout her basketball journey, with many residents remembering her contributions to local causes, including starting a food shelf in high school.
As the Wings prepare for their next game, the excitement remains high in Hopkins. “It’s a special day for the community,” Mayor Hanlon added. “We stand together to celebrate a remarkable talent.”
In addition to Bueckers’ debut, Kelsey Plum made headlines on the same night by scoring 37 points for the Los Angeles Sparks, setting a WNBA season opener record. The opening weekend of the WNBA is set to include more exciting matchups, including a notable game featuring the Indiana Fever against the Chicago Sky.
