Paige VanZant Eyes UFC Return After Break from MMA

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Former UFC fighter Paige VanZant is expressing a strong desire to return to the octagon, stating that she would need to work hard to earn her spot back in the promotion. VanZant, who fought under the UFC banner from 2014 until 2020, concluded her tenure with a record of 5-4 before moving on to compete in bare-knuckle boxing and other combat sports.
During a recent interview, the 30-year-old revealed her longing to compete again, sparked by a recent opportunity to fight alongside her husband, Austin Vanderford. “If I’m completely honest and transparent, I was to a point where I was happy with my career,” she said. “But making the walk with my husband again made me realize how special this is.”
VanZant turned professional at just 19, debuting in the UFC at 20. Reflecting on her early career, she now understands the significance of her achievements. “I didn’t realize what a big deal it was back then,” she noted. “I might have taken it for granted.”
Despite acknowledging the challenges she would face to return to the UFC, VanZant is optimistic. “I know it would take a lot of work and dedication for me to earn my shot back into the UFC,” she said. “But definitely, my heart misses it.”
While she contemplates a UFC comeback, VanZant has signed a long-term deal with the new organization Global Fighters League. “I think this is the perfect opportunity because I didn’t necessarily leave MMA,” she explained. “When I became a free agent, BKFC presented the best offer, which sparked my interest. Now there’s this new organization that excites me to fight for them.”
Her return to competitive fighting comes after a brief glimpse of UFC life last month, where she was inspired by the current fighters. VanZant originally made headlines during her UFC career, starting with three consecutive wins before a defeat to Amanda Ribas marked her last bout in 2020, when she was submitted quickly. “I know it will take a lot to get back, but I’m ready to pursue it,” she said.
As VanZant sets her sights on the Global Fighters League, she recognizes her opportunity to redefine her career in MMA. “This is where my passion lies, and I’m excited for this new challenge,” she asserted, confident in her ability to succeed and perhaps find her way back to where it all began.
