Pakistan and West Indies Clash in Multan Test Amid WTC Struggles
MULTAN, Pakistan (AFP) — Pakistan and West Indies are set to face off in the first Test of their two-match series in Multan on Friday, with both teams looking to end their struggles in the World Test Championship (WTC). The series comes at a time when both nations are languishing at the bottom of the WTC standings, with Pakistan in eighth place and West Indies in last.
Pakistan captain Shan Masood emphasized the importance of the series, stating, “This cycle is finishing, so this series is significant for us as we want to become a better team by being unbeaten in home conditions.” Pakistan recently broke an 11-match winless streak at home with a 2-1 victory over England in October, and Masood hopes to maintain that momentum.
West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the need for a strong start to the year. “We want to start the year strong, and that is our focus,” Brathwaite said. The West Indies have struggled in recent series, including a clean sweep by England and a home defeat to South Africa.
The Multan pitch is expected to favor spin, with Pakistan deploying industrial fans and heaters to dry the surface, a tactic they used successfully against England. Pakistan’s spin attack, led by Noman Ali and Sajid Khan, who took 39 wickets combined in the England series, will be a key factor. West Indies, meanwhile, will rely on their own spin trio of Kevin Sinclair, Jomel Warrican, and Gudakesh Motie.
West Indies will be without pace spearhead Kemar Roach, who is unwell, and have dropped vice-captain Joshua Da Silva after a string of poor performances. Wicketkeeper-batter Amir Jangoo is set to make his international debut. Pakistan, on the other hand, have included uncapped Muhammad Hurraira in their lineup.
The weather in Multan is expected to be bitterly cold, adding another layer of challenge for both teams. The second Test will also be held in Multan, starting January 25.
