Palmeiras and Manchester City Finalize Record-Breaking Deal for Vitor Reis
SÃO PAULO, Brazil — Palmeiras and Manchester City are in the final stages of negotiations for the transfer of 19-year-old defender Vitor Reis, with the deal expected to be finalized this week. The transfer, valued at approximately 35 million euros (R$ 219 million), would make Reis the most expensive Brazilian defender in history.
The clubs advanced talks on Monday, with both sides working on the final details of the agreement. Reis is expected to travel to England this week to undergo medical examinations and sign his contract with Manchester City. The move would see him leave Palmeiras immediately, bypassing the Club World Cup.
Reis, a product of Palmeiras’ youth academy, made his professional debut last year, playing 22 matches and scoring two goals. Despite his young age, he quickly became a key backup in the team’s defense, behind Gustavo Gómez and Murilo. His contract with Palmeiras, which runs until 2028, includes a release clause of 100 million euros (R$ 619 million).
Manchester City’s interest in Reis has been long-standing, with the English club previously engaging in discussions with the player’s representatives. The deal marks a significant milestone for Brazilian football, surpassing the previous record set by Lucas Beraldo, who was sold by São Paulo to Paris Saint-Germain in 2023 for 20 million euros.
Palmeiras has not officially confirmed the transfer, but sources close to the negotiations indicate that the deal is imminent. The club is expected to use the funds from the sale to strengthen its squad ahead of the upcoming season.
