Panama’s Historic Victory Secures Spot in Copa America Quarterfinals
Panama’s national football team achieved a historic milestone by clinching a spot in the quarterfinals of the Copa America. The Panamanians secured their place with a 3-1 victory over Bolivia in a Group C match held in Orlando, Florida.
Jose Fajardo, who scored for two consecutive games, opened the scoring for Panama at the 22nd minute. However, Bolivia equalized with a goal from Bruno Miranda at the 68th minute, putting Panama in a precarious position.
Eduardo Guerrero, coming off the bench, made an impact with a crucial header at the 79th minute to put Panama ahead. César Yanis, another substitute, sealed the victory with a spectacular goal in added time.
The win against Bolivia not only secured Panama’s place in the knockout stages but also led to the elimination of hosts United States, who fell to Uruguay in the final group game.
Coach Thomas Christiansen praised his team’s efforts and highlighted Panama’s unpredicted success in the tournament. Despite missing key player Adalberto Carrasquilla due to suspension, Panama showcased resilience and determination throughout the match.
Panama, making only its second appearance in the Copa America, has already surpassed its previous performance and will now face the winner of Group D, either Colombia or Brazil, in the quarterfinals.
Edina Alves made history as the first female referee in a Copa America match. The Brazilian official presided over the Panama-Bolivia clash, adding another milestone to her career.
