Florida Panthers Captain Sasha Barkov Injured

TAMPA, Fla. — Florida Panthers captain Sasha Barkov left Thursday’s Game 2 against the Tampa Bay Lightning after suffering an undisclosed injury in the third period. The injury occurred during a hit from Lightning forward Brandon Hagel, leading to a major penalty for interference.

The hit transpired at 9:51 of the third period while the Panthers led 1-0. Hagel targeted Barkov after the puck had moved past him, resulting in Barkov falling hard against the end boards. Medical staff assisted Barkov on the ice before he left the game with 10:09 remaining in regulation and did not return.

Panthers coach Paul Maurice did not provide a specific update on Barkov’s condition after the game, but promised to have more information during practice on Friday. “He’s irreplaceable. He’s an irreplaceable player,” said Panthers defenseman who expressed concern about Barkov’s impact on the team.

Barkov has been a key player for the Panthers in the postseason, posting three assists in the series so far, including a setup on the first goal of Game 2. The Panthers earned a 2-0 series lead with their victory, bolstered by a strong defensive performance that included killing off five Lightning power plays.

Florida has shown resilience in Barkov’s absence, as they managed to secure the win with an empty-net goal by Bennett in the final seconds. “Everyone is going to be talking that we’re done, but we believe in this locker room we can come back,” said Lightning winger.

The Panthers will practice in Fort Lauderdale on Friday and will assess Barkov’s status before their next game against the Lightning on Saturday afternoon.
