Panthers and Jets Swap Goaltenders for Fresh Starts

WINNIPEG, Canada — The Florida Panthers and Winnipeg Jets completed a trade Thursday that will see goaltenders Chris Driedger and Kaapo Kahkonen swap teams, as both players seek new beginnings in familiar environments.
Driedger, who was briefly a top backup option for Florida, has struggled in recent years due to injuries and poor performance, managing only two NHL appearances in the past three seasons. He now returns to his hometown of Winnipeg, where he is expected to provide insurance for the Jets’ goaltending duo, Connor Hellebuyck and Eric Comrie.
“Chris has a solid track record, and we feel he can contribute to our depth as we navigate the season,” said Jets General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff in a statement.
Kahkonen, 28, brings with him six seasons of NHL experience, having played for the Minnesota Wild, San Jose Sharks, New Jersey Devils, and Colorado Avalanche prior to this trade. He struggled during his time with the Manitoba Moose, the AHL affiliate of the Jets, with a record of 6-14-1 and a goals-against average (GAA) of 3.29.
“We believe Kaapo will bring a much-needed change of scenery and help stabilize our goaltending situation in Charlotte,” said Panthers General Manager Bill Zito. “His experience will be valuable as we move forward.”
Kahkonen’s arrival in Florida marks the fourth NHL organization he has been with this season. He was initially claimed off waivers by the Avalanche from the Devils before being picked up by the Jets.
The Panthers are looking to add depth in the net after trading away former starting goalie Spencer Knight earlier in the week. By acquiring Kahkonen, who has a career 49-68-15 record in 140 games, the Panthers aim to bolster their AHL goaltending options following a challenging season so far.
Driedger’s past performance includes a standout season during 2019-20, where he recorded a .931 save percentage and a 2.07 GAA in 35 games, making him a notable figure in the Panthers’ roster at that time.
As both goalies embark on this new chapter in their careers, they will look to regain their footing and demonstrate their potential in their respective leagues.
This trade highlights the ongoing commitment by both teams to pursue optimal performance despite challenging circumstances. Further developments regarding their adaptation to new roles are anticipated as they integrate into their new squads.
