Carolina Panthers Running Back Miles Sanders

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers officially released veteran running back Miles Sanders on Tuesday, just ahead of the new league year. The decision follows a tumultuous two-season stint for Sanders with the team, during which he faced considerable challenges both on the field and in contract negotiations.

Sanders, 27, joined the Panthers in 2023 on a four-year deal valued at $25.4 million, after a successful career with the Philadelphia Eagles. However, he struggled to maintain his starting position, ultimately losing the role to Chuba Hubbard late in the 2024 season. The Panthers’ decision to release him clears $5.225 million in salary cap space for the upcoming year, according to reports from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

During his time in Carolina, Sanders accumulated 637 rushing yards and three touchdowns over 184 carries. He also added 51 receptions for 302 yards and one touchdown. His performance diminished significantly in 2024, recording only 205 yards on 55 carries, marking the lowest output of his career.

The Panthers’ roster still includes Hubbard, who enjoyed a breakout season with a career-high 1,195 rushing yards and ten touchdowns, leading to a four-year contract extension worth up to $33.2 million. While Sanders had been expected to share the backfield duties, his underwhelming performance and failure to reach a restructured contract led to the team’s decision to part ways.

“We wish Miles all the best in his future endeavors,” said a Panthers spokesperson. “His contributions to the team over the last two seasons are appreciated, and we look forward to exploring new opportunities in free agency.”

Aside from Sanders, the Panthers have also waved goodbye to Raheem Blackshear, who served as their primary kick and punt returner last season, and Mike Boone, a depth running back. With Jonathon Brooks recovering from a second ACL injury, Carolina’s backfield depth appears thin, presenting challenges in the upcoming season.

As the legal tampering period in the NFL is underway, the Panthers are actively seeking potential replacements. The team may look into various free-agent running backs to bolster their roster, as they aim to build a competitive squad for the 2025 season.

The Panthers’ management faces a critical offseason, needing to address both the running back position and overall team strategy moving forward.
