Panthers Release Veteran Running Back Miles Sanders Ahead of New League Year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers announced the release of veteran running back Miles Sanders on Tuesday, just before the start of the new NFL league year. Sanders, who joined the Panthers as a free agent in 2023, quickly became a key player in the organization.
In his two seasons with the Panthers, Sanders accumulated 184 carries for 637 yards and three touchdowns, as well as 51 receptions for 302 yards and a touchdown. His performance included a pivotal game-winning touchdown in overtime during the final matchup against Atlanta last season. Despite Sanders’ efforts and a long-term contract extension he signed last fall, the two sides could not reach an agreement on a contract restructure.
“We appreciate everything Miles has done during his time here,” said Panthers’ General Manager Scott Fitterer in a statement. “He’s a talented player who made significant contributions to our team. We wish him all the best moving forward.”
With his release, the Panthers will clear $5.23 million in cap space, although they will incur a dead money charge of $2.95 million from the remaining part of his contract. This decision reflects a strategic shift as the Panthers look to create room for potential acquisitions in the upcoming free agency period.
Sanders’ tenure with the Panthers included a strong start but faltered as the season progressed, leading to speculation regarding his future with the team. He was previously a standout player with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he earned Pro Bowl honors.
The Panthers now look to bolster their backfield with Chuba Hubbard, who remains on the roster along with other running backs, as they prepare for the upcoming season.
This development adds another layer to an already dynamic offseason for the Panthers, as they also assess their roster needs beyond the running back position.
