Panthers Set to Move On From Veteran LB Shaq Thompson

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers have officially informed veteran linebacker Shaq Thompson that he can enter free agency, signaling a shift in strategy for the team.
The decision comes after Thompson, who turns 30 next month, has faced significant injury setbacks, appearing in just six games over the past two seasons. He was drafted by the Panthers in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft and served as a team captain while amassing 752 tackles, ranking fourth in franchise history.
General Manager Dan Morgan expressed gratitude for Thompson’s contributions in a statement, saying, “We appreciate Shaq’s leadership and dedication over the past 10 seasons. Always a source of passion and enthusiasm, he poured into his teammates and strived to bring out the best in them. We wish Shaq the best as he moves forward with his career.”
Thompson’s injury woes included a broken ankle during the 2023 season and a torn Achilles in Week 5 of the same year. Despite these setbacks, he managed to post a career-high 135 tackles in 2022. His impressive accolades also include three interceptions, four forced fumbles, and 12.0 sacks across 123 games played.
As a key figure in the locker room, Thompson’s leadership will be missed, according to Morgan. Thompson was not only a backup on the field but also served as a mentor for younger players. His ties with the organization were strong, having expressed a desire to retire with the Panthers earlier this offseason.
Now that Thompson is set to explore free agency, the Panthers will look to address their linebacking corps as they prepare for the upcoming season. The team struggled defensively in 2024, finishing with the worst defense in the league, indicating a need for a comprehensive revamp.
Thompson’s legacy in Carolina will likely remain significant, marked by his steadfast dedication and resilience throughout his career, even as he looks to continue his journey in a new environment.
