Paolo Banchero Set to Return for Orlando Magic This Week
Injured Orlando Magic All-Star Paolo Banchero is expected to return to the court this week, according to ESPN sources. The 2022 No. 1 overall pick, who has been sidelined since Oct. 30 with a torn oblique, could make his comeback in one of the team’s back-to-back home games against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday or the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday.
Banchero, who was upgraded to questionable on the NBA‘s injury report after participating fully in Wednesday’s practice, has missed 33 games this season. Despite his absence, the Magic have maintained a strong 22-16 record, placing them fourth in the Eastern Conference standings.
Before his injury, Banchero was averaging 29 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game, ranking seventh in the league in scoring. His standout performance included a career-high 50 points in an Oct. 28 win over the Chicago Bulls, making him the second-youngest player in NBA history to record at least 50 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists in a game.
The Magic have also been without breakout forward Franz Wagner, who has been sidelined since Dec. 6 with a torn oblique. Wagner, who was on pace for an All-Star season, has missed 13 games and counting. Despite these setbacks, Orlando remains competitive in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Banchero’s return comes at a crucial time for the Magic, who are aiming to secure a top-four seed in the playoffs. Last season, Banchero earned his first All-Star selection and helped lead the team to its first playoff appearance since 2020. His improved performance this season, including a 49.5% field goal percentage and 34.4% from beyond the arc, has been a key factor in Orlando’s early success.
While Banchero’s return is imminent, Wagner’s timeline remains unclear. The Magic will look to build on their strong start as they push for a deeper playoff run this season.
