Pass The Buck Wins Warragul Cup After Ownership Change
Pass The Buck claimed victory at the Warragul Cup, less than a month after switching ownership to a syndicate led by his trainer, Anthony Azzopardi. The Rowsley-trained greyhound showcased impressive speed from box three, leading the race from start to finish and holding off a strong challenge from Flying Zulu to win in 25.48 seconds.
Azzopardi expressed confidence in Pass The Buck’s abilities ahead of the final, citing the dog’s early speed as a key factor. ‘I told the owners, ‘I think he’ll lead all of the way tonight’,’ Azzopardi said post-race. ‘He was on song tonight, he was really focused.’
The ownership change occurred after Azzopardi proposed buying the greyhound from breeders Darren and Michael Puleio. ‘I sort of said, ‘I would like to buy the dog and the dog will never leave me here’,’ Azzopardi explained on RSN‘s Grey Areas. ‘I want him to live here the rest of his life, I want to keep him as a pet and maybe get a few litters out of him too.’
Pass The Buck has been in exceptional form, with Azzopardi stating that the greyhound is in the best shape of his career. ‘I’ve got to say, he’s probably the best I’ve ever had him,’ Azzopardi said. ‘I’m very happy with him; it’s the first time I can say he’s 100 per cent. He’s a very fast animal… when you get him right, he will perform.’
Favourite Zeus Thunderbolt showed early speed but couldn’t overtake Pass The Buck, while Flying Zulu secured second place. Zipping Hopkins narrowly held out Field Day for the minor placing.
