Patrik Laine’s Challenging Path with Montreal Canadiens: Injuries and Potential

Patrik Laine Montreal Canadiens 2024

Patrik Laine, a key player for the Montreal Canadiens, is undergoing a challenging phase in his career. Despite being a strong prospect, Laine’s debut with the Canadiens has been delayed due to injuries and past seasons plagued by instability.

The 2023-2024 season was difficult for Laine, who had been expected to be a pivotal player for any team, including fantasy league enthusiasts. During the previous season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Laine faced various hurdles, including a coaching change shortly before the season began. Mike Babcock‘s replacement by Pascal Vincent appeared to have unsettled the team’s dynamics further.

Under Vincent’s management, Laine’s playtime decreased significantly, leading to dissatisfaction and ultimately affecting his performance. The management’s decision to try Laine in a center position only added to his woes, negatively impacting his confidence.

Laine’s struggles were compounded by a shoulder injury in mid-December, sidelining him for an estimated six weeks. During this period, he also entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program, effectively ending his season prematurely with only 18 games played.

Statistics from Laine’s curtailed season are telling: 6 goals, 3 assists, and a -10 plus/minus rating. Prior to his injury, Laine was positioned to play alongside Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook on the second line, with Coach Martin St. Louis opting not to disturb the top line.

Although known as a power play asset earlier in his career, Laine’s recent record in Columbus shows only 38 power-play points out of a total of 138, indicating a decline. His projected role in the Canadiens involved playing on the second power-play unit.

As Laine attempts to recover, his return is tentatively planned for December, although the risk of surgery still hangs over him, potentially further delaying his comeback. In the best-case scenario, Laine could miss the first 23 games, or up to 37 if his rehabilitation requires more time.

Despite these setbacks, Laine offers valuable potential for fantasy leagues. If available, a strategic move could be to hold a speculative spot for Laine for a possible late-season surge. In fantasy terms, Laine could still provide notable points, provided he is used judiciously given his injury history and current status.
