Patriots, Bears Eye Eagles’ Josh Sweat in NFL Free Agency Frenzy
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The New England Patriots and Chicago Bears are poised to address critical defensive needs in the upcoming NFL free agency period, with both teams reportedly targeting Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Josh Sweat.
The Patriots, who traded away key pass rushers Matthew Judon and Josh Uche in 2024, are left with a significant void in their defensive lineup. Keion White remains their primary option, but the team is expected to aggressively pursue reinforcements. According to Mike Dussault of the Patriots’ official website, Sweat is a top candidate to fill this gap.
Sweat, 27, had a standout 2024 season, recording 41 tackles and eight sacks in 16 games. A fourth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Florida State, Sweat has developed into a consistent force for the Eagles. He earned his first Pro Bowl nod in 2022 after posting 45 tackles and 7.5 sacks, followed by an even stronger 2023 campaign with 48 tackles, 11 sacks, and an interception.
“Sweat has been a durable and reliable presence in Philadelphia’s pass rush,” Dussault noted. “His age and production make him an ideal fit for the Patriots’ rebuilding timeline.”
Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears are also eyeing Sweat to bolster their defensive line. With approximately $75 million in cap space and four draft picks in the top 75 selections of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Bears are well-positioned to make significant upgrades. Pro Football Focus (PFF) recently identified Sweat as a prime target for Chicago, citing the team’s need for an edge rusher after ranking 27th in PFF’s overall defensive grade in 2024.
“Sweat’s pass-rushing prowess and consistency make him a logical fit for the Bears,” a PFF analyst stated. “Pairing him with their existing talent could transform their defense.”
Both teams will have to compete for Sweat’s services when free agency opens in March. The Chesapeake, Va., native has proven his value over the past four seasons, ranking 24th in PFF pass-rushing grade (80.7) and 22nd in wins above replacement among edge rushers.
As the offseason approaches, the Patriots and Bears are expected to be among the most active teams in the free-agent market, with Sweat emerging as a coveted prize.
