INDIANAPOLIS — With new leadership, the most salary cap space in the league, and a high draft pick, the New England Patriots are buzzing at this week’s NFL Combine. Coaches, agents, and talent evaluators have been abuzz with discussions about prospective changes for the team, which is widely expected to overhaul its roster in the coming months.

Head Coach Mike Vrabel‘s comments about pursuing free agency are widely viewed as more than just talk. Sources around the league confirm that the Patriots plan to hit free agency aggressively when the legal tampering window opens on March 10, eyeing potential upgrades for both offensive and defensive lines.

“Expect us to make some moves to improve our roster,” Vrabel remarked. With an emphasis on enhancing the trenches, the Patriots are particularly interested in Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Milton Williams, who had a career-high five sacks last season. Given uncertainties surrounding the health of Christian Barmore and Davon Godchaux‘s future in Foxborough, Williams could bring reliability to the defensive line.

Additionally, Tennessee Titans edge rusher Harold Landry is another target. Landry, drafted by Vrabel during his tenure in Tennessee, is a natural fit for the Patriots’ defensive scheme, especially if the Titans decide to cut him. Landry could significantly bolster a defense that finished last in the NFL in sacks last season.

The Patriots also recognize the need to revamp their offensive line, looking to bolster both tackle positions and add at least one guard. Baltimore Ravens Pro Bowler Ronnie Stanley is a top prospect, and New England is expected to show considerable interest if he enters the free-agent market. Current evaluations deem second-tier options like Cam Robinson and Alaric Jackson as less favorable.

As the team focuses on acquiring a No. 1 receiver, options appear limited. Despite ongoing speculation about adding top talent like Tee Higgins or Chris Godwin, those targets seem less likely to become available. Reports indicate San Francisco‘s Deebo Samuel is not a good fit for the Patriots’ system, and a potential deal for Seattle SeahawksD.K. Metcalf seems reserved for a return to the West Coast.

“No. 1 receivers just aren’t readily available right now,” Vrabel quipped during a press conference. The uncertainty surrounding the free-agent market puts more pressure on the Patriots as they prepare for a key draft at No. 4 overall.

The NFL Combine also features significant discussions about Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham and his value at that crucial draft spot. Defensive standout Abdul Carter is also a name to watch after suffering a foot fracture, but the Patriots believe his stock will remain high.

Travis Hunter, the two-way Heisman winner, is being evaluated by the Patriots as both a wide receiver and cornerback. With a consensus opinion among scouts that he may be the best cornerback in this draft, his dual-threat capability could allow him to contribute on both sides of the ball if selected.

As free agency approaches and the NFL Draft nears, the actions taken by the Patriots will be closely monitored. With recent coaching changes, a fresh perspective may usher in a new era of competitiveness for the franchise as they seek to strengthen the roster ahead of the 2025 season.
