BARCELONA, SpainPau Cubarsi, an 18-year-old center-back for FC Barcelona, is set to return to his club after suffering an ankle injury while on international duty with Spain. The injury occurred during the first leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final against the Netherlands in Rotterdam on March 21, 2025.

Cubarsi faced a tough challenge from former teammate Memphis Depay that resulted in him being substituted in the 41st minute of the match. According to a statement from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), he went down holding his ankle and received treatment on the field before being removed from the game.

The Spanish FA confirmed on March 22 that Cubarsi would not participate in the second leg against the Netherlands and would instead return to Barcelona for medical evaluation. “After scans conducted, the Spanish FA has decided Pau Cubarsi returns to his club, FC Barcelona, to start recovery from the problems he had in his right ankle,” the RFEF stated.

Barcelona later revealed that Cubarsi underwent additional tests on Saturday, which indicated he has an elongation of the anterior tibiofibular ligament in his right ankle. “He will undergo conservative treatment, and his tolerance to activity will be re-evaluated in 48 hours,” the club reported.

This setback comes as Barcelona currently leads La Liga and prepares for several key matches. Coach Hansi Flick has seen the young defender form a promising partnership with Iñigo Martínez in central defense. The club remains hopeful that Cubarsi will recover in time to face Osasuna on March 27.

The situation has become increasingly concerning for Barcelona’s defensive lineup, as Iñigo Martínez is already ruled out for at least three weeks. Ronald Araujo may also miss upcoming matches after international duty with Uruguay, leaving Eric García as one of the few available center-backs.

Cubarsi debuted for FC Barcelona’s first team in January 2024 and quickly established himself as a regular player, making a total of 19 appearances last season. He celebrated his 18th birthday in January, which allowed him to sign a long-term contract with the club that extends through 2029. This season, he has made a combined total of 42 appearances across all competitions.

In a separate incident, Brazil goalkeeper Alisson is also returning to his club Liverpool after suffering a head injury during a World Cup qualifier against Colombia. The 32-year-old was substituted in the second half after feeling dizzy from the collision. Liverpool released a statement clarifying that Alisson would be assessed by their medical staff upon his return to Merseyside.

“Alisson is travelling back to Merseyside and will undergo assessment from the Reds’ medical staff,” Liverpool stated. The goalkeeper later reassured fans through an Instagram post, stating he was fine and just following medical protocols.
