LONDON, England – Paul Merson has raised concerns that Chelsea star Cole Palmer might look for opportunities beyond the club, suggesting he may desire something greater than what the Blues can currently offer. Merson described the young player as “top drawer” and emphasized Palmer’s ambition to compete at the highest level.

Palmer, who joined Chelsea after an underutilized stint at Manchester City, has made significant contributions in his first season, recording 14 goals and six assists. Despite missing out on Champions League football last season, Merson noted that Palmer might expect Chelsea to secure a place in the prestigious tournament next season.

The current landscape for Chelsea is uncertain, as they sit sixth in the Premier League with the season’s conclusion approaching. Merson cautioned, “If they finish outside the Champions League this year, Palmer will want to be playing in it. He’s getting to the stage where he’ll want to be watching Champions League football.”

Additionally, reports emerged about a potential clause in Palmer’s contract. According to TEAMtalk, this clause could obligate Chelsea to consider offers for the attacking midfielder if they fail to qualify for Champions League football. However, it remains unclear whether there is a definitive selling price for Palmer or if clubs would need to engage in a bidding war for his services.

“With all these big squads and players on long contracts, I don’t know how this is all going to pan out,” Merson remarked during his appearance on Sky Sports. He stressed that Chelsea must focus on finishing in the top five to retain Palmer’s services.
