Payton Pritchard Wins NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award

BOSTON, MA — Payton Pritchard of the Boston Celtics has been named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year for the 2024-25 season. Pritchard, who excelled as a backup player, scored more than 1,000 points in games he did not start and set the league record for 3-pointers made by a backup. The award was announced on TNT during a broadcast on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
Pritchard topped competitors Malik Beasley of Detroit and Ty Jerome of Cleveland, marking the fifth time a Celtics player has claimed this honor. Previous recipients include Kevin McHale and Bill Walton, with Malcolm Brogdon winning the award in 2023. ‘This is definitely an honor,’ Pritchard said following the announcement.
The award is named after Celtics legend John Havlicek. ‘Payton is a baller,’ said Celtics President Brad Stevens. ‘His effort, care, and commitment are evident every day, and this recognition is a tribute to what he brings to our team.’
This announcement is the first of several NBA award announcements for the season, with the Clutch Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards to be revealed soon.
Pritchard led all reserves with 1,079 points and 246 three-pointers during the season, along with an impressive plus-minus of +428. His assist total of 257 ranked third among nonstarters, showing his significant impact on the floor.
Part of Pritchard’s role is supporting fellow teammates Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. ‘It’s a learning curve coming from college,’ Pritchard said. ‘You have to read the game and take advantage of opportunities when they arise.’
Fans admire Pritchard for his energy and fearless approach to shooting, especially deep three-pointers. He also recorded a phenomenal triple-double on March 5, scoring 43 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, although it did not officially count.
The Celtics finished the season with a record of 61-21. The team performed exceptionally well when Pritchard scored at least 20 points, with a record of 17-6 in those games. Celtics guard Jrue Holiday praised Pritchard, noting his scoring ability and tenacious defense.
Pritchard received 82 of the 100 first-place votes, with Beasley and Jerome trailing behind. Last year’s Sixth Man of the Year, Naz Reid from Minnesota, received the other first-place vote.
