Pecatonica Girls Basketball Team Celebration

PECATONICA, Ill. (WIFR) – The Pecatonica basketball teams are on the brink of history, with both the boys and girls squads competing for titles as they advance to vital stages of the 2025 IHSA State playoffs. The girls team has secured a spot in the 1A State Championship game, while the boys prepare for sectional finals.

On March 6, the Lady Indians triumphed over St. Edward 54-41, showcasing a strong performance that was led by senior guard Elaina Rager, who scored 25 points. Pecatonica controlled the game throughout, with St. Edward’s only lead being a brief 2-0 advantage at the start. Senior Kianna Degner contributed significantly to the win with 15 points.

This victory pushes Pecatonica’s record to 31-6, placing them a win away from their desired State Championship title. The team will face Carrollton at 1 p.m. Saturday at CEFCU Arena in Normal, Illinois. Rager expressed her excitement, stating, ‘Making it to this point is amazing for us, and we are focused on bringing home the championship.’

Meanwhile, the boys team is gearing up for their own challenge on March 7, as they compete against Eastland in the Sectional Final. The boys’ journey has been equally thrilling, with a notable victory over Dakota earlier in the season.

The collective success of Pecatonica’s basketball teams this season has galvanized the local community, with many rallying to support both teams’ aspirations for state glory. The boys’ sectional match is set for 7 p.m. Friday, promising an exciting evening for Pecatonica fans.

Earlier in the playoffs, the Pecatonica girls team secured a spot in the semifinals by defeating Abingdon-Avon (A-Town) with a decisive 50-35 victory in the 1A Super-Sectional. Coach for the Lady Indians praised the team’s hard work, saying, ‘The girls came out strong and never looked back. They’ve shown resiliency all season long.’

This year has indeed become unforgettable for Pecatonica basketball, marking a time when both programs aim for the highest honor in Illinois high school sports.
