Pelicans’ McCollum Hits Milestones Despite Team’s Struggles

Fargo, ND, USA — In a thrilling game on Wednesday night, the New Orleans Pelicans managed a surprising 119-115 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, buoyed by star forward Zion Williamson‘s 29 points. However, amid the celebration, guard CJ McCollum achieved personal milestones that are monumental in his NBA career.
McCollum contributed 18 points on 7-of-18 shooting from the field and 3-of-9 from three-point range, moving past Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki to secure his position at 19th on the NBA’s all-time three-pointers made list. This achievement marks a significant moment in his 12-year professional journey, as he now has 1,983 made three-pointers and is just six away from surpassing Jason Kidd for 18th.
“I just play the game, but passing someone like Dirk, that’s special,” McCollum said after the game. “Every time I step on the court, I strive to get better and contribute to my team.”
Additionally, McCollum’s scoring performance allowed him to leapfrog Dick Barnett, moving him to 151st on the NBA’s all-time scoring list with 15,359 career points.
Despite the individual successes, the Pelicans have faced challenges this season due to injuries impacting their roster. The team is working to build around its core, including players like Trey Murphy III, Dejounte Murray, and Herb Jones. Team health has been a significant obstacle, yet McCollum’s veteran experience has proved invaluable.
“CJ is a cornerstone for us, even though we have been struggling,” Pelicans head coach Willie Green said. “His leadership and ability to perform under pressure can’t be understated.”
The Pelicans are looking to build on their recent win as they face the Timberwolves again on Friday, with hopes of repeating the success from Wednesday’s game.
This season, McCollum is averaging 20.9 points and 4.0 assists per game, shooting 44.1% from the field and 37.5% from beyond the arc. His consistent performance is crucial for the young Pelicans as they navigate the challenges of the season.
