Pelicans’ Williamson, McCollum Out for Remainder of 2024-25 Season

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The New Orleans Pelicans announced Monday evening that Zion Williamson and C.J. McCollum will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season due to injuries. This decision effectively sidelines the two key players as the team struggles through a disappointing season.
Both players sustained injuries earlier this month, with Williamson suffering a lower back contusion during a game against Minnesota on March 19. He managed to play only 30 games this season, averaging 24.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Williamson’s injury history continues to raise concerns, as he has missed more games than he has played since entering the league.
McCollum, who has been a crucial player for New Orleans, sustained a right foot contusion on March 23 during a game against Detroit. Prior to his injury, he averaged 21.1 points over 56 games this season. The team will focus on his rehab, aiming to ensure that he returns healthy for the next season.
Pelicans head coach Willie Green indicated that both players will concentrate on rest and rehabilitation. The team has already lost fellow starters Trey Murphy III and Herb Jones for the year, compounding their injury woes. With a 21-54 record, New Orleans currently holds the fourth-worst mark in the NBA.
Williamson’s ongoing injuries have been a significant concern for the franchise. The former No. 1 overall draft pick has never played more than 70 games in a season and has now recorded his third season of 30 games or fewer in just five years. His struggles to maintain health have prompted discussions about the team’s long-term strategy.
“It’s important for us to look at the long-term health of our players,” Green said. “We need to consider their well-being even if it means losing out on these final games.”
As the Pelicans move forward, they will also focus on the NBA Draft lottery, where they are positioned to potentially secure a high pick. The team is eyeing prospects in a loaded draft class, hoping to find a franchise cornerstone that can help transition them from a rebuilding phase to contending for a playoff spot.
Historically, teams that finish with poor records have a higher chance of securing top players in drafts. With the Pelicans aiming to capitalize on this opportunity, the remaining games of the season will serve as a platform for younger players to gain experience while the starters heal.
The stark contrast between this year’s performance and past seasons where the Pelicans have been competitive puts increased pressure on the organization to make impactful moves. The loss of Williamson and McCollum not only affects game strategies but also impacts fan engagement and team morale.
As the Pelicans prepare for the remainder of the season, they strive for resilience in a challenging environment, all while dreaming of brighter days ahead.
