Bob Chesney James Madison Football Coach

University Park, Pennsylvania – The Penn State Nittany Lions are nearing a decision on their next football coach, with CBS analyst Josh Pate naming Bob Chesney as a leading candidate. Chesney, currently the head coach at James Madison University, has guided his team to a 10-1 record this season.

Pate shared his insights on his Sunday night show, stating, “I think they have zeroed in on their guy the past several days. I think that guy may be Bob Chesney.” He also noted that other coaches have been considered, but Chesney’s performance has put him at the forefront of the search.

Chesney’s impressive tenure includes a 19-5 record since taking over at James Madison, where he succeeded Curt Cignetti. Known for his five seasons with 10 or more wins, Chesney has also led seven different teams into playoff situations at various collegiate levels.

James Madison remains a contender for the College Football Playoff, with a 56.6 percent chance of making it, contingent on winning the Sun Belt Conference title. Chesney’s style aligns closely with the attributes Athletic Director Pat Kraft has emphasized, including toughness and a strong work ethic.

While Chesney’s track record is promising, he faces questions about his experience with Power 4 teams and NIL recruiting strategies. His previous roles include stints at Division III Salve Regina, Division II Assumption, and FCS Holy Cross.

Former Penn State tight end Adam Breneman remarked on the possibility of a “mystery candidate” also being considered for the coaching role. Breneman mentioned that current players are supportive of interim head coach Terry Smith, who expressed a desire to remain if appointed as the head coach.

Despite support for Smith, Pate believes Penn State may look elsewhere. He said, “I think there’s a good option for Penn State out there,” suggesting that Chesney could be the right fit.

The coaching search follows the dismissal of long-time head coach James Franklin. As the conclusion of the season approaches, the spotlight remains on Penn State’s next move.
