Peres Jepchirchir Sets Women’s Only WR at 2024 London Marathon

Kenya’s Peres Jepchirchir made history at the 2024 London Marathon by setting a new women’s only world record with a blazing time of 2:16:16.

Jepchirchir’s impressive performance saw her cross the finish line ahead of Tigst Assefa from Ethiopia, who finished just seconds behind in 2:16:23. Joyciline Jepkosgei, another Kenyan, closely followed in third place with a time of 2:16:24.

Notable names in the women’s event included Megertu Alemu, Brigid Kosgei, and Sheila Chepkirui, who posted strong times of 2:16:34, 2:19:02, and 2:19:31 respectively.

In the men’s race, Alexander Mutiso of Kenya claimed victory with an impressive time of 2:04:01, edging out Ethiopian distance running legend Kenenisa Bekele, who finished in 2:04:15.

British runner Emile Cairess delighted home fans with a remarkable performance, securing third place with a time of 2:06:46. Mahamed Mahamed and Hassan Chahdi also put in strong showings, finishing in 2:07:05 and 2:07:30 respectively.

The wheelchair events showcased incredible talent, with notable athletes like Marcel Hug and Daniel Romanchuk dominating the men’s division, while Catherine Debrunner shone in the women’s race.
