Pete Alonso’s Free Agency Saga: Where Will the Power Hitter Land?
NEW YORK — As the 2025 MLB offseason drags on, Pete Alonso, the prolific power-hitting first baseman, remains the most intriguing free agent still on the market. With most of the top-tier free agents already signed, Alonso finds himself in a precarious position, weighing limited options and shorter-term deals than he initially anticipated.
Alonso, a four-time All-Star and two-time Home Run Derby champion, has been a cornerstone of the New York Mets since his rookie season in 2019. However, his free agency has been anything but smooth. Despite his consistent power numbers—leading all players in home runs and RBIs since his debut—teams have been hesitant to commit to a long-term deal due to concerns about his age, declining on-base percentages, and limited defensive value.
“It’s a tough market for a player like Pete,” said one MLB executive, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Teams are valuing versatility and youth more than ever, and while Alonso’s power is undeniable, his overall profile doesn’t fit the modern mold.”
The Mets, Alonso’s longtime team, remain a potential landing spot. Despite trading away key players and signing A.J. Minter, the team still has a glaring hole at first base. Reports suggest that Alonso’s camp has proposed a three-year deal with opt-outs, a significant departure from the seven-year, $158 million offer he reportedly turned down in 2023.
Other teams, including the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays, have also been linked to Alonso. The Mariners, who traded their Opening Day first baseman last season, could use Alonso’s power to bolster their lineup. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays, despite signing Anthony Santander, are reportedly still interested in adding Alonso to complement Vlad Guerrero Jr. in their lineup.
“The Angels can’t be ruled out either,” said another source. “If Arte Moreno is willing to offer a three-year, $100 million deal, Alonso could end up in Anaheim.”
As the offseason winds down, Alonso’s future remains uncertain. While a return to the Mets seems plausible, the slugger’s market has been slower than expected, leaving fans and analysts alike wondering where he’ll ultimately land.
