Pete Alonso New York Mets Batting

NEW YORK — The free agency of New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso has become one of the most intriguing storylines of the MLB offseason. Despite being the top first baseman available, Alonso remains unsigned as teams weigh his high asking price against his undeniable talent.

Alonso, a three-time All-Star and 2019 National League Rookie of the Year, has reportedly been seeking a lucrative long-term deal. However, his demands have left him in a precarious position as other first basemen have already signed with teams. Keegan Matheson of MLB.com noted the unique nature of Alonso’s market, stating, “Pete Alonso’s market — and some of the reporting around it — has been … unique.”

The Mets remain the favorites to re-sign Alonso, but the Toronto Blue Jays have emerged as a serious contender. Matheson added, “Yes, the Blue Jays like Alonso, but this continues to feel like a situation where Alonso is waiting for the Mets. Like they’ve done many times in past pursuits, the Blue Jays can position themselves well as the next-best option here, which may be enough in the end, but my eyes are still on the Mets.”

Toronto’s interest in Alonso stems from their need to bolster their lineup around star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The Blue Jays recently signed outfielder Anthony Santander, signaling their intent to compete in 2025. Adding Alonso on a three- or four-year deal could significantly upgrade their offense and provide Guerrero with much-needed support.

While the Mets have the advantage of familiarity and a strong relationship with Alonso, the Blue Jays have the financial resources to make a competitive offer. If Alonso’s negotiations with the Mets stall, Toronto could swoop in and secure the slugger, reshaping the landscape of the American League East.
