Pete Alonso New York Mets Hitting Baseball

NEW YORK, NY — Pete Alonso, 30, is experiencing a career resurgence, reminiscent of his standout performances during his junior year at the University of Florida. Alonso’s offensive statistics in April 2025 have hit new heights, as he works to improve on a disappointing 2024 season where he posted a career-low .788 OPS.

“Best I’ve ever seen him,” said a longtime National League scout, noting Alonso’s complete approach at the plate this season. “I’ve seen the peaks of power, but those typically come with more strikeouts and less on-base. This is the complete package.”

Before the season began, Alonso refined his swing to enhance his decision-making and increase the quality of his contact. The results speak for themselves, with Alonso producing a .345 batting average and leading in several categories such as a 1.128 OPS and a low chase rate of 22.4 percent.

Alonso’s contract situation also looms large. He re-signed with the Mets on a two-year deal that includes a player option for the 2026 season. As scouts evaluate his performance, opinions vary on whether his improvements could enhance his value in the long term. Some analysts are optimistic, while others remain cautious about his ability to maintain this performance level.

In addition to Alonso’s impressive stats, the Mets have activated second baseman Jeff McNeil and catcher Francisco Alvarez from the injured list, bolstering their roster as they head into May. Both players missed crucial time due to injuries suffered earlier in the season, with the team needing their depth as they currently hold the best record in MLB at 19-9.

Meanwhile, the recent injury to pitcher A.J. Minter and concerns about closer Edwin Díaz‘s availability for upcoming games added pressure to the Mets’ pitching staff. Manager Carlos Mendoza acknowledged these setbacks but remains optimistic about turning the page as the season progresses.

Alonso’s resurgence and the return of key players signal potential stability for the Mets as they navigate the challenges of the MLB season.
