Pete Carroll Reunites with Key Staffer Matt Capurro at Raiders
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Pete Carroll, the newly appointed head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, has begun assembling his staff, bringing in a familiar face to help lead the team. On Friday, Carroll announced the hiring of Matt Capurro as vice president of coaching operations, reuniting the two after years of collaboration at both the collegiate and professional levels.
Capurro, who spent 15 years with the Seattle Seahawks, most recently as vice president of coaching operations, will now join Carroll in Las Vegas. The two previously worked together at USC in 2009 and during Carroll’s tenure with the Seahawks from 2010 to 2023. Capurro also has deep ties to the Raiders organization, having worked under Al Davis in Oakland from 2004 to 2008.
“Matt is a vital part of any coaching staff,” Carroll said in a statement. “His ability to manage the daily operations and long-term planning is unmatched. Having him here with the Raiders is a huge win for us.”
Capurro’s role with the Raiders will mirror his previous responsibilities. He will oversee the daily schedule for Carroll and the coaching staff, as well as manage year-round planning for the team. While not a coach himself, Capurro is widely regarded as a key figure in maintaining the structure and efficiency of a coaching staff.
Capurro’s connection to the Raiders runs deep. A Bay Area native, he began his career with the team as a football operations intern from 1998 to 2003. He later served as an assistant to the head coach from 2004 to 2008, working under multiple coaches during that time. His familiarity with the organization, combined with his history with Carroll, made him an ideal candidate for the position.
“Matt knows what it takes to build a successful program,” said Albert Breer, an NFL analyst who first reported the hiring. “His experience with Carroll and the Raiders makes this a perfect fit.”
The hiring of Capurro is seen as a strategic move for Carroll, who is looking to establish a strong foundation in his first year with the Raiders. With training camp set to begin in July, Capurro’s expertise will be crucial in ensuring a smooth transition for the team.
Capurro’s departure from the Seahawks marks the end of a significant chapter in his career. During his time in Seattle, he played a key role in the team’s success, including their Super Bowl XLVIII victory in 2014. Now, he will look to bring that same level of excellence to the Raiders as they aim to rebuild under Carroll’s leadership.
